Hate Crimes in Canada

Some stories read like sci fi, where I think that yes, society could head this way because the signs are there, but when I see it actually happening there is this sense that the world truly is mad and we are living in a nightmare. Like this story.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission has been investigating a Catholic Priest for "hate" comments made during a recent debate over same-sex marriage.
Father defended the Church’s teaching on marriage during Canada’s same-sex ‘marriage’ debate, quoting extensively from the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and Pope John Paul II’s encyclicals. Each of these documents contains official Catholic teaching.
So if quoting official Catholic teaching can bring on a "hate crime" investigation, then author of my linked article is quite correct in asking if Catholicism itself can be considered a "hate crime" in Canada.

But that's not all. Another Canadian and well-known columnist, Mark Steyn is also now under investigation because an American commented one of his columns on an American website, which shows that Steyn is promoting "hatred", which therefore warrants investigation. Nothing to do with Catholicism, all Stein was saying was that Islam was inherently violent. If you look at the evidence that seems very much to be the case.

On a related note, all of this reminds me of a FNFA last month where we had an anonymous commenter spam our website using some sort of posting script with what I can only describe as a vile sexual threat against myself. We've since changed our commenting policy so that only registered people can comment so that if it ever happens again we'll have more of a chance of tracking down the person who issued the comments.

I can imagine that the real purpose of "hate" crimes was originally to criminalise comments such as those that were made. The comments included a reference to my religion as well as rape and torture, so they were truly vile. However, as vile as they were, I don't think criminalising the comments as such would be a good way to go. Only if the comments were considered a valid threat should they even be taken seriously.

Maybe that's why a Catholic Priest is being investigated in Canada for "hate" crimes. Catholicism is a real threat to "gay rights". Not in a physical sense, just in the moral where homosexuals are treated as persons who need help, not artificial mollycoddling and false beliefs about the "rightness" of "gay marriage".

  1. I also heard that quoting
Catholic teaching can get people in trouble in Saudi Arabia.
