Friday Night Free for All

It's Friday. What a week! If you've caught any of the Olympics then you'd almost be forgiven for missing what's happening in the rest of the world. Awesome stuff. Speaking of awe and shock, Georgia is on many minds of course. Did the world change, or did we just open our eyes a little bit wider?

And in the more mundane world of New Zealand life, Georgina Beyer seems to have given up on NZ, and wants to go to Australia, where apparently, they'll offer her plumb jobs. Helen didn't, and that's just not fair. And socialism is all about fair. And fair leads to entitlement. And entitlement is about what's owed, and how fair is it to be in debt?

What else is fair is the Tuhoe demands to separate from NZ with the parts of it that they had taken as their own before someone else took it from them. They want it back, so the Government will agree on behalf of all New Zealanders to take it from all New Zealanders. How come fair means that someone always loses anyway? 'Fairness' isn't playing fair. It's a socialist ideal that never lives up to its promise. Not that selfishness is perfect either. Although that's the first mistake to make, isn't it? If option A doesn't quite work, present the opposite option, Option B. Say nothing whilst your target chooses between the lesser of two evils.

Never disclose that there was a third option. Or even a fourth.

The option tonight? To stop in and say hello. To put aside the smaller differences and embrace the bigger commonalities. We all like to be treated with respect; we all have capacity to act as humans - you know, the humanitarian ones, and that we all like to have a good meal and a fine drink in good company.

See you in the comments section.

  1. And today is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven. Hence the picture added to the post.

  2. Hello Youse All.

Oddly enough I've watched not one jot of Olympics this time round. Just can't raise any enthusiasm for it at all. It seems few athletes can either. (just kidding)

Great result for the centre right in tonight's Roy Morgan poll. Labour's secret tapes sting has not worked. The Grand Strategist shoulda stayed home instead of going tramping. Looks like maybe Obama shoulda stayed home instead of going on holiday.

What's the betting Hillary will hijack the convention and steal the nomination???

  3. Today, I put up a post at No Minister on the subject of razor blades. It seems to have struck a chord and a modest comment stream has ensued. Reminds me of a letters to the editor stream to The Bulletin (PBUI) arounf 1980 in which hundreds of people wrote learned treatises on the crrect way to hang the toilet roll.

"Should the paper pull down from the wall side of the roll of from the outer side of the roll? That is the question."

It went on for about three months until the editor had to call a halt.

  4. All I see in that Roy Morgan graph is a slowly closing gap, Adolf. True weirdness - NZ First up, to 6.5%. There's a section of the NZ public that really gets off on Winston making fools of them.

  5. Milt, you're quite right. I suggest that Labour was counting on seeing a damned sight more than that. Now that serious National policy is emerging (Where is Labour's policy, BTW?) I expect to see that narrowing lead reversed.

  6. I've watched a little of the Olympics, as hubbie managed to dig out our old arial connection thingie and lo and behold we have reception for channels 1 & 2! Plus today before our homeschoolers visit to the local firestation the kids and I momentarily watched the screen at the mall before realising we were late and had to rush off.

Firestation visits are great! Though I was surprised that both I and my 7yo enjoyed the visit more than my 11yo.

  7. Evening all--what crappy weather!
I've got the old deck half demolished and itching to get on with the job, but it's impossible in these conditions.

  8. Hi kg, I can understand the frustration. At this rate it'll be Spring and I won't have done all my late winter gardening and the weeds will take over! Not to mention all the roses I want to move.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Annoying, isn't it Lucyna? I'm dealing with the weeds with weedmat and Roundup. And luckily we planted the roses before the weather closed in.
Now I'm busy brewing home-made wood preservative (borax and antifreeze)--the house smells like a treatment plant.

  10. Evening all! I don't so much like that Roy Morgan tonight - assuming Peters goes with Clark, on those figures the Maori Party holds the balance of power.

  11. Good evening from Silverdale everyone. Some beastly thunderstorms and showers today.
But the little kid in me would rather have snow.
Did you see One News tonight, all those big dumpings down sotuh.
    So much for global warming.
    Have you got snow KG?
As for Roy Morgan, I too saw a closing gap but it could have been worse. It is a worry to see Winnie on 6.5% too.

  12. We have nearly finished pruning the grapevines on a 70 acre block, bloody cold work and the Canterbury water table is exceptionally high.

As a result I expect an early run of whitebait. Yum -yum.

  13. Inventory2 if the Maoris hold the balance of power after the election then GOD HELP US ALL !!!!

  14. Hi Fairfacts--we had some snow, but just flurries and none of it really settled.
    Roll on summer!

  15. You might get some tomorrow KG.
So who's putting Winnie on their blogroll.
I was open to the idea because I thought it would be amusing to see him.
But my colleagues at No Minister don't want to promote him, which is fair enough, so we at NM won't have him on our blogroll.
It is funny to see Captain Baubles adopt new technology though.
I wonder what Rodney has on him.

  16. Aaaaargh! I very much hope not FF.
And I won't put Peters on CR's blogroll until he pays back our money--and probably not even then.

    ReplyDelete
  17. My prediction is that within three or six months time Peters will be in jail for a long long time.

  18. Fingers crossed...
FF, there's a great stoush going on over at Not PC under his carked mountain guide post.

    ReplyDelete
  19. There's also been a good stoush at The Standard, where a lowlife by the name of Tillerman praised Clark's "commitment to New Zealand" and slagged off Key for holidaying in Hawaii. Tane has now deleted the last line, when he should delete the entire post.

  20. Evenin'all.
New here, but have been lurking for some months.
Met our new National Tauranga candidate last night - Simon Bridges - a fine young man, and I think he will flog Winnie, even if Winnie overcomes his current problem. Helen must be crapping herself - early election anyone?
    Great picture Lucyna.

  21. Another cold & stormy night.

Today I was out in the frozen white stuff unblocking a frozen chemical line to a local water supply.

Ain't it grand being an essential service worker!

But I must admit it is somewhat satisfying to restore something like a town water supply.

I spent a part of my OT for that effort on the first season of the new Battlestar Galactica. An Awesome series!

  22. Howdy all. Just sorting out a late dinner. It will be something simple tonight. Lasagna. Wine.

    ReplyDelete
  23. How'd you unblock the line, Oswald? A big gas axe?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ramming a hose up it!

    And whacking it by hand!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I see--sounds too technical for me. Whatever happened to a small charge of jelly?

    ReplyDelete
  26. The small charge of gelly should be rammed up the council pratt that approved the consultant that designed this POS water supply!

    ReplyDelete
  27. rofl!! elfnsafety wouldn't approve.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Right--off to bed. Much work tomorrow and I'm cold.
Thanks for the company and stay safe, eh?

  29. Good Night KG.
    Sleep well and stay warm.
I have been over to NotPC and I thought I was restrained for a change over the Lake Tekapo tragedy.
But I feel Dear Leader needs to be held to account over why she was out in bad weather, etc, putting herslef and others at risk.
I thought a press conference was questionable for a tragedy too.

  30. Evening KG. Or perhaps, Good Morning if you check in Saturday.

I got distracted with dinner, the gymnastics and a terrible throat infection.

I wonder how BB is doing? Does anyone know? I hope all is OK with his medical adventures.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Throat infection....horrible thing to have. Hot water and honey helps, but I'm a believer in huge doses of antibiotics, too.
When your ears are ringing and hands shaking, the dose is about right. ;-)

  32. I read the article about George Beyer and all I could imagine was her saying "wa wa wa, I served in Parliament but I am not allowed into the privileged political class allowing me to leech off the tax payer for the rest of my life, wa wa wa!"
