Obama admits to being Muslim [Update 2]

I heard a little while ago on the radio (NewsTalkZB) Obama admitting to being Muslim while talking to the Turks. Great, huh? He basically lies about it while in the US, and then on his overseas tour, bares all to non-Americans who didn't even vote him in while his country is sleeping. Wonder what else he wasn't so honest with as well? That little citizenship problem ...

[UPDATE] Found the reference online, finally. Here is what Obama said:
“The United States has been enriched by Muslim-Americans,” he said. “Many other Americans have Muslims in their family, or have lived in a Muslim-majority country.

“I know,” he said, “because I am one of them.”

And then he paused. Throughout his speech, he had moved swiftly from passage to passage, but this time, he waited for the interpreter to catch up. After about five seconds, the applause came.

[UPDATE 2] The ambiguity over what Obama said has been noted. He may not have been saying that he was Muslim himself. Though, it sure sounded that way to me when I heard that part of his speech on the radio. And it seems that Al-Jazeera thought so, too. Only briefly, however, as the relevant news item is no longer on their website. Most curious.

  1. Do you have any links to back up that ZB item Lucyna? If true it's explosive stuff.

  4. Oh, saw the update. Not a secret Muslim then.

  5. I suspect he will simply clarify (to Americans) that he is one of those who has lived in a Muslim-majority country...whilst giving a different impression by carefully chosen words to, err, fellow Muslims.

  6. From your first link (just in case it ever disappears):

"Let's make clear what the facts are: I am a Christian. I have been sworn in with a Bible. I pledge allegiance [to the American flag] and lead the pledge of allegiance sometimes in the United States Senate when I'm presiding."

Mr Obama is a member of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ and is an actively practising Christian.

Given that it's quite plainly what he said, why would he need to clarify it? The view that he was saying he's a Muslim-American requires serious butchery of his syntax.

  8. Either that, or the statement was made to read one way and be listened to another way. From listening to him and his tone and the way he said what he said, it sounded like he was saying he was Muslim himself.

  9. I don't know Milt, it seems a carefully nuanced comment to me. Literally you are correct though

But I wonder how it translates (was translated) into Turkish and how it comes across in that tongue.

Obama is definitely the Manchurian candidate
