Atheist Buffalo Hunter

A self proclaimed atheist from Australia has burned the bible and the Koran, and posted the event on you-tube.

Mr Stewart is a commercial contracts lawyer at Queensland University of Technology. This morning he refused to answer phone calls. The assistant organiser of Brisbane Atheists wrote on the group's website last night "do you think I am in trouble????"

He says people offended by the experiment are taking it "too seriously".

"It's just a f...ing book, who cares," Mr Stewart says.

I.D.I.O.T - just a bunch of letters. It's not like they mean anything. Except to some people it might convey a particular meaning, and express a particular idea.

Here's another idea. Mr Stewart is a buffalo hunter.

To this assistant organiser of the Brisbane Atheists club, showing disrespect merely to prove that, to him, "it's just a book" only proves that he is so self centred in his perspective he can't bother ascribing any value to another perspective.

I actually find his action worse than the Pastor who was planning to burn the Koran as a protest against the Islamic Cultural Centre planned for construction near Ground Zero. He thought he was countering an injustice. He thought the other side wasn't listening. This guy just wants to underscore the point that he isn't into symbolism, and he thinks others shouldn't be either. It doesn't worry me one way or the other, but I'd have been more impressed if he cashed up his belongings and burned all his money. They are just pieces of paper with ink.

I liken him to the lazy Buffalo Hunters that used to sit on the trains running across America. They hunted by leaning out the window, killing Buffalo for mere sport. 60 million buffalo reduced to an endangered species not by callous brutality, but by a self indulgent indifference.
The Indians watched in dismay as buffalo hunting took on an almost a carnival atmosphere when railroads began to advertise "hunting by rail.” This occurred when trains sometimes encountered large herds of buffalo crossing the tracks. Seeing a way to capitalize on the problem, the advertising flooded the newspapers and in no time, sporting men with rifles were shooting buffalo by the hundreds just for fun. Those animals shot from the train were simply left where they died.

Such action had it's consequences though, and not just for the buffalo.
As the slaughter continued, the Indians became increasingly angry and resentful as they watched their main source of sustenance dwindle at the hands of the white man. This led to more and more Indian attacks which resulted in U.S. Army retaliation at the height of the Indian Wars. It was also at this time that the U.S. Government desired to separate the Indians from the rest of "civilization” by placing them on reservations. In order to do this, the U.S. Army aggressively pursued a policy to eradicate the buffalo, intentionally extinguishing the Indians' sustenance, which would force then onto reservations.
It may have started as self indulgent indifference, but it didn't take long to get to callous brutality.

I stand by my comments on my earlier post about Freedom, but it doesn't stop me shaking my head at the idiots who abuse it.

  1. Just so I don't confuse the natives: Death threats (and real death) in response to book burners is an entirely inappropriate response.

I'm thinking name calling and maybe a wedgie would be suitable.

Mind you, should some-one torch a whole library I think I'd move the rhetoric up a notch.

  3. So is Buffalo Hunting.

  4. Cripes Zen historically you Catholics have loved nothing better than to destroy the writings of anyone that upsets your narrow sensibilities.

In their hey-day The Spanish Inquisition relished burning Korans & any other Islamic text they could lay their hands on.

Virtually the entire writings of the Mayan Civilization were destroyed with perverted pleasure by The Catholic Church.

For good measure nearly every Cathar text that could be found by your Church was also destroyed as well.

This nutty pastor Terry Jones and the one guy in Brisbane would have to build a bonfire the size of both the states of Florida & Queensland to come close to the Catholic Churches suppression of free-thought and alternative beliefs through-out the ages.

It was only four years ago Catholics in Rome and Manila decided Dan Browns ‘Da Vinci Code’ deserved being BBQed.

So on the on-hand it's fine for your beloved faith to do what it likes when it comes to book-burning but the moment it's your favourite book that's a different kettle of fish.

Suppresion of free-speech and beliefs is a one-way street eh?

    Gotta shoot.

    Paul.

  5. Hey Paul, touched a raw nerve I see. Don't worry, it's early days on this planet for atheists as a cult. But they'll catch up real fast.

  6. Nah it’s you that’s smarting Zen – that’s why you got all cry-baby-like and posted something on this in the first place.

Don’t get too excited mate I had half written a blog on book-burning prior to my comments above and all I did was cut and paste them in – it took all of 30seconds.

Having a Catholic complain about book burning is like an alcoholic moaning about pubs being open late.

You are right though, if atheists ever needed the blueprint for establishing fascist cult (minus the rampant child abuse, hatred of Jews and homosexuals) - what better template than Catholicism?

If I every attend an Atheist Society meeting I’ll be sure to place your suggestion on the agenda.

    See ya.

    Paul.

  7. Cry baby? It's hilarious.

And unfortunately you appear to have missed the entire point of my post, because the book burning isn't a big deal one way or the other, it was more the point of why he was doing it.

    Buffalo Hunter. Ride 'em cowboy.

  8. "rampant child abuse" and "hatred of Jews"?
In that case, what better template than the Marxist teacher's unions, Paul?
But they get a free pass from you.
And as pointed out, you missed the entire point of the post--but never pass up an opportunity for a little Catholic-bashing, eh?

  9. A self proclaimed atheist...

What other sort is there? Or are we not permitted to self identify? must we wait on a proclamation from the holy see?

Time you looked around and noted the the pope is just a man in a silly dress, he is no longer master of the universe.

    Gott ist tot

  10. Yes KG, rampant child abuse.

    Here's just one more report.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/10/belgium-child-abuse-catholic-church

The explosive report by Peter Adriaenssens in the town of Louvain, east of Brussels, lists evidence of 476 instances of child abuse by priests and bishops going back 50 years.

    (...)

He has since documented cases of abuse occurring in almost every diocese in the country and in virtually every school run by the church. "We can say that no part of the country escapes sexual abuse of minors by one or several [church] members," said Adriaenssens.

"This is the church's Dutroux dossier," he added in reference to the notorious Belgian paedophile serial killer, Marc Dutroux, who kidnapped, tortured, abused and murdered six girls in 1995-6.

Speaking of the victims, Adriaenssens said that 13 had killed themselves, according to relatives, and another six had attempted suicide.

Now, what was that about motes and specks?

  11. Aaah yes--the scummy troll/spammer comes out of the woodwork....
    And your point is?
"Now, what was that about motes and specks?"
    I mentioned neither.
My comment was aimed at Paul's attack on the Catholic Church regarding child abuse, while ignoring worse figures for the same where teachers are concerned.
Now, I'll just go check the spam filters over at CR to make sure no more of your verbal pornographic filth gets through.

  12. And yet, just like your claims for your mythical gaod, you offer proof for neither claim about teachers or my supposed posts at your fetid swamp.

When it comes to abuse, nobody does it better than the religious. And of the religious, well, the catholics have made it in to an art form.

But don'tlet your "love" of god turn you towards compassion for children, us atheists can handle that quite well.

The stench of your hypocrisy is sickening.

  13. I thought this thread was supposed to be about the willful ignorance of human nature re: other people's important symbols, not child abuse by Catholics?

    I call shenanigans.

  14. I must have struck a raw nerve with LRO too. I don't think anything he said had the slightest relevance to the post.

  15. 1) I have posted both links and evidence for my claims about teachers and child abuse here in NZ Conservative before.
Since you appear to be too lazy to do your own research, here's a couple more:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charol_Shakeshaft

    http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2004/4/5/01552.shtml

2)"When it comes to abuse, nobody does it better than the religious. And of the religious, well, the catholics have made it in to an art form."
I'll treat that sweeping and unsubstantiated statement with the contempt it deserves.

3)"But don'tlet your "love" of god turn you towards compassion for children"
You have absolutely no idea of my level of compassion for children.None. And no evidence for reaching any conclusion about it.

4)"And yet, just like your claims for your mythical gaod"
I have made no claims in here concerning my God (or my "goad", for that matter)
Retract and admit that statement is baseless or be known for the liar you are.
